The Model

  • Direct delivery of education in communities: In 2006-07, there will be Pratham direction action in 5000 communities in rural areas or urban slums.  On average, each community has 250 households and 400 children in the age group 3-14.  These direct delivery programs are across 13 Indian states in over 50 urban locations.
  • Catalytic action:  Working with village panchayats, state and district governments, other organizations and volunteers to bring every child to school and to ensure basic reading, writing and arithmetic.  In 2006-07, over 1000 rural blocks in the country will have a Pratham presence.  In several states, such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, MP Rajasthan, UP and Bihar, state wide catalytic action is already underway in different partnerships.
  • An annual countrywide sample survey to monitor progress in each district towards SSA goals. 509 rural districts participated in ASER 2005.  In this year’s survey, ASER 2006, urban areas have also been covered and a greater coverage of rural areas is done.
